Current Stage Plan

Current Stage Plan

-Shakespeare's Globe Theatre: A Fold out map which shows historical traces of Shakespeare in London on one side and a full page illustration on the reverse showing the Globe and giving promotional information of the theatre. To be a promotional brochure which can be bought/picked up at local Tourist Information, The Theatre or the Shakespeare's Globe Theatre Shop.

-Shakespeare's Globe Theatre Shop: A T-Shirt design for one of the plays. This would fall under product design with the aim to give a better representation than what the shop currently has on offer. The posters in their shop are really great and give a good representation of the plays and the time that they originate from and the t-shirts show a strange contrast.

-CD Cover Design: I would like to reillustrate/redesign the cd cover for Clannad's album Legend which was the soundtrack for the tv series “Robin of Sherwood” broadcast in the 80s. I absolutely love the tv series and the soudntrack included. There are two existing covers of the album, one showing the leading actor from the series the other a photo of a lake. As these are both photographic covers I would like to make an illustrated version. This would include the front and back. The front would purely open as one spread not as a full booklet. I would also illustrate the inlay under the cd and the cd.

-A Book Cover: At first I had in mind to do a graphic novel of a few pages but now having done this in during the general school time I realize that it is practically impossible to realise such a project in the short period of time especially when in conjunction with other projects. Instead I would very much like to illustrate a book cover. I would like to do this for the Charles Dickens classic Bleak House. Most covers for this book and dull and predictable: A House. I should like to pick a more meaningful element of the story to represent on the cover. The publishers I have in mind are Penguisn Classics and Vintage Classic as they both have a wider range of modern and illustrated covers for Classic Books than other publishers. They also both have a wide range of cover style in their publishings and not one specific format. My preference would probably go to Penguin Classics as I am more familiar with this company.

-Zoo Information Board: I would like to illustrate a board which would supply information for the visitors on a specific animal. I should like to do this for an animal such as the hare, deer, cheetah etc in relation to the manner in which they run. Full speed action is something seen not too frequently in zoos (except probably around the ape and monkey enclosures) and I think it would be informative and attractive for an information plaque. I should like to do this either for a zoo in the Netherlands or the London Zoo.

Promotion: 1

I'm still not completely sure as to how many people we are supposed to contact in relation to the projects, one for each or some that cover numerous projects.

People I would be interested in contacting:

Dave McKean (CD Covers and Book Covers)

What I used to want to be...

I remember when I was wee and at school in New Zealand I often used to pretend to be...
ROBIN HOOD...

while my friends used to play other roles from the Sherwood tales. I still think it would be pretty cool to be Robin Hood!
At home I often pretended to be a...
TRAVEL AGENT...
and I would book holidays for Kirsten, my mother who pretended to be the customer.
The earliest profession I remember wanting to be was an...
EGYPTOLOGIST...
swiftly followed by an...
ARCHAEOLOGIST.
This was my ambition for a very long time.
Apart from that I have wanted to be...
an ACTRESS, MOVIE DIRECTOR, FILM CONCEPT DESIGNER, HISTORICAL ADVISOR FOR FILM and very briefly a ZOOKEEPER. I also had the dream to found a museum which functioned as a real village and portrayed a combined historical and eco-friendly way of living (while residing in New Zealand for the second time).
I still have a great interest in all these things and try to combine them with my current illustration work when I can.

My Stage Ideals

-I would love to do something related to Shakespeare's Globe theatre in London. I myself have never visited this theatre but as I have a love of Shakespeare's plays it would like going on a pilgrimage to go there. I have seen many of the photo's from their production and I admire the fact that still put on many plays in full Elizabethan/Shakespearean costume. In the constantly growing world of modern theatre and minimalist stage design and with my love of history their approach catches my eye. As I truly hope that this form of theatre does not disappear with time I would love to be able to make promotional material for them. Another interesting area is their merchandise and other such products. Connected to the Theatre is also a shop where they sell all sorts of things including a range of products such as mugs, canvas bags and t-shirts. What I noticed was that these products most certainly do not represent the general image of the theatre but neither do they represent the rich atmosphere of the plays. To find a different approach for these products would truly bring me great joy.

-Another ideal situation would to have Dave McKean as a stage leader. He is my ultimate hero on the art/illustration scene and it would be an honour to have him guide me in my work. At the same time it would be absolutely terrifying but would potentially also be a good confidence boost.

-For a long time one of my dreams has been to work for the BBC. With the ever increasing trash on TV which is also the reason why at home we no longer have TV but purely purchase DVDs I admire the BBC. Although they have their moments of dull daytime television they still produce many programmes of quality. They also have a wide range of Fantasy and Science Fiction programmes such as Doctor Who, Merlin and Being Human created with great care compared to other television stations. To work amongst these people would be truly amazing and a dream come true, whether in a stage period or in the future (as they have a training programme in different fields).

-To go along with all above I would love to go to London to meet interesting people and finally go to the Globe Theatre!
